For more than six decades, AWCO has translated its vision into meaningful service to the community.
AWCO's commitment to older persons began formally in 2003, when the organization launched the Aid the Aged (ATA) programme in recognition of the plight of poor, neglected and vulnerable elderly people in Abiriba. Through ATA, AWCO members contribute food items, clothing, toiletries and financial assistance, which are distributed to elderly men and women in need.
AWCO's vision goes beyond periodic assistance. We aspire to create a sustainable environment where older people can receive care, companionship and dignity. In partnership with the Abia State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA), AWCO constructed a Recreation and Day Care Centre for Elderly People.
The foundation for the Centre was laid during the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Organisation on 21st' November, 2009 on a piece of land within the premises of the Akahaba General Hospital (courtesy of the Abia State government through the efforts of Prof. Mkpa A. Mkpa). Work is progressing steadily on the project.
The Centre is being equipped to provide a safe and welcoming environment where older people can relax and interact with others, participate in recreational activities, receive basic care and support, enjoy companionship and social engagement, and access general hygiene and well-being support.
AWCO has already achieved significant milestones, including perimeter fencing, landscaping, external solar lighting, furnishings and the acquisition of an 18-seater bus. Our goal is to commence full daily operations and gradually expand the services offered at the Centre.
We welcome individuals, organizations, philanthropists and partners who share our vision to support the Centre through financial contributions, equipment, services and other forms of partnership. Together, we can give our elders the dignity, care and respect they deserve.
AWCO believes that education is the foundation for personal development, community advancement and a better future. From the establishment of our first nursery school to our continuing support for indigent students, education has remained central to AWCO's mission. We support young people by helping them access educational opportunities, examination registration and financial assistance where possible.
AWCO also recognizes that education must include practical skills that enable young people to become economically independent. Through our partnership with Bloom Health Foundation, 28 young people completed a six-month intensive skills training programme in 2025.
AWCO is committed to building partnerships that can help graduates obtain the equipment and opportunities they need to turn their skills into sustainable livelihoods. We want every young person with potential to have an opportunity to learn, develop their talents and contribute meaningfully to society. We are not only preserving a legacy. We are preparing the next generation to create one.
Training areas included catering & baking, fashion design & tailoring, computer training, hairdressing & barbing, makeup & head-tie styling, event planning & decoration, and basic auto-mechanics.
AWCO is committed to promoting the dignity, welfare, and advancement of women while supporting families and individuals facing difficult circumstances. Through advocacy, practical assistance, and community-focused initiatives, we continue to champion a more supportive and compassionate environment for women and families in Abiriba.
AWCO believes that progress and cultural preservation can move forward together. In 1996, AWCO published The Enachioken: A Collection of Abiriba Folklore as part of its commitment to preserving the positive aspects of Abiriba culture and traditions.
AWCO continues to encourage the preservation of our heritage while promoting values that strengthen dignity, unity, responsibility and community development.
